Can anything other than toast/sandwich be prepared out of white bread slices?

– How about a dessert?

That was the surprise my father got when he asked my mom that question.

My mom gave a sweet smile and said lets have that dessert in the evening. I cannot explain my father’s reaction when he tried it.

Many childhood memories freshen up when I was make this dish.

So heres the step by step recipe for bread ka halwa. People also call it Bread ka Sheera. Bread ka Halwa is dish is also incredibly famous in Indian Hyderabadi cuisine. This halwa can be made either in white or brown bread depending on your taste or your choice.

You could call it bread pudding, but a true European bread pudding would mean sweet sauces rather than the Ghee we Indians use.

It is unique extremely easy-to-make takes about 30min and I treat this as a fix to my sweet cravings.

You could adjust the sweetness with sugar or experiment with other dry fruits to give it a taste that is uniquely yours.

Bread Ka Halwa/Bread Pudding

Ingredients

  • 6 Pieces Bread slice
  • 5 tbsp Clarified butter Ghee
  • 1 tbsp Almonds Chopped
  • 1 tbsp Cashew nuts Chopped
  • ½ tbsp Raisins
  • ½ tbsp Green cardamom powder
  • 2 tbsp Sugar or as per your taste
  • 1 tbsp Khoya Grated
  • 1 cup Milk

Instructions

  • Cut bread slices into small pieces. Heat ghee in a nonstick pan and fry the sides of bread.
  • Add ghee, after ½ (half) minute add dry fruits and stir it well till they change the color (light pink).
  • Add sugar and milk and mix well and bring it to boil. Now to this boiling milk add fried breads. Stir and mix everything very well. Simmer on a low to medium-low flame. The bread cubes will absorb milk and start thickening.
  • Now this time add khoya and cardamom powder and gently mix everything. At this stage you can see bread halwa begins to release ghee.
  • Turn off the gas and take it out in serving bowl.
  • Serve delicious bread ka halwa.

Notes

Customize the sweetness according to your taste. Experiment with other dry fruits to give it a taste that is uniquely yours.
